Department of Psychology

The development of psychology was a result of the classic philosophy. Later on, it changed as novel approaches to explore psychology emerged. The formal establishment of modern psychology dates back to 1879, when Wilhelm Wundt established an experimental laboratory in Leipzig ,Germany.

The controversy about how to characterize and explain the human mind and behavior started when psychology originally split apart from Biology and Philosophy to become a distinct scientific field. The main theories in the field of psychological science have been portrayed by various schools of psychology.

Wilhelm Wundt, the man who established the first psychology lab, supported structuralism, the first school of thought. Other hypotheses soon began to emerge and challenge supremacy.

The major schools of psychology are Cognitivism, Behaviorism, Psychoanalysis, Gestalt, Structuralism, and Humanism.

In India at Calcutta University, psychology was first offered as a subject under the philosophy department. In 1905, Brojendra Nath Seal, the King George V Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy at that time, established a laboratory for demonstration purposes and wrote the first experimental psychology curriculum. With this the journey of psychology started in Indian education system.
